John

John Appleby has been playing drums for more than 30 years and is entirely self taught. Within 6 months of buying his first drum kit he joined his first band.

In 1974 John helped form the long running and well respected Joe Hooker Band, which in 1978 re- jigged itself into The Hounds and gained much notoriety with its first single and subsequent TV appearances.

Also during this period John played a short stint with Chris Finnen’s Offering.

In 1979 with “New Wave” at its peak John helped form Safari Set which within its short 9 month existence, managed to headline major shows and win SA FM’s Summer Search Competition.

From there John joined Perfect Game, which went on to become a very successful band with their self financed cassette going to no 2 on the Triple M charts. Between 1981 & 1984 they supported almost every major international and interstate act to tour SA.

Since that time John has played in numerous bands including Chris Finnen’s 360 degrees, Scafell Pike, Glass Eye, Sympathy Orchestra, JBE, Steve Foster’s OCQ and My Brother Jake, with performances at The Fringe, Adelaide Festival and Womadelaide

During this time there have also been numerous recording sessions for various artists including Steve Foster, Chris Finnen and Kate Battersby.

John is at present forming a new band with Chris Finnen, which will incorporate Folk, Blues and World Music themes.

Rob

Rob O'Connor / O'Connell started playing in bands when he was 14, joining Eve (later to become The Stunts and Swanee’s backing band) as lead singer at 17.

He met John Appleby in 1978 and joined The Hounds. One song, “Little Darling”, was filmed for Donny Sutherlands’ Sounds program in 1979. This was later released independently as a single b/w “Liberty and Justice” in early 1980 after the band had dissolved.

Following a brief move to Sydney and an even briefer stint with Dial X back in Adelaide in early 1980, Rob hooked up with Linz and John to form Safari Set.

After nine sensational months, Rob suddenly broke up what was at the time Adelaide’s most popular band, teaming up with Alan Powell (Joe Hooker Band, The Hounds) and Shane Sampson (Street Corner Jack, Le Club Foote) to form Train Set. This band moved to Sydney at the end of 1981 as a four-piece, with Ian Jones (The Hippos) on sax.

Rob worked briefly with The Numbers on their second album in early 1982 while Train Set became Temper Temper and Andre Poublon (The Spell) joined on drums. For the next five years Temper Temper performed around Sydney to a small and loyal following, with an occasional tour to Adelaide and opening for acts such as Divinyls, Midnight Oil, Dr. Feelgood, The Go-Betweens and The Saints. Two songs, “Chauffeur” and “Working for the Family” appeared on the 1983 Strawberry Hills compilation album. The line-up grew with the addition of David Sparks (The Lime Spiders, Gyan, The Saints, Truck Brothers) on guitar and one single, “Friday Night” b/w “You’re So Fine” was released independently on the Arika label in 1985. Two film clips were made during this time, “Spit it Out” (released on the Australian Rock Co “Tip of The Iceberg” compilation) and “Drinking the Water from the Radiator” – to date, no sound recording of this song has been released.

Rob moved to Melbourne in February 1987, travelling back to Sydney to record “I’m Shot” and “Jump Backwards” with Temper Temper for JJJ’s Band of the Week compilation. This was a four-piece line-up with Kim Sampson (Joyous Invasion) on drums, along with Alan and David. Two clips were made for “Jump Backwards” with both appearing on Rage at various times.

Back in Melbourne, Rob joined up on bass, vocal and song-writing duties with Phil Hyde (Street Corner Jack, Le Club Foote), Kim Sampson and Steve Gunther to form Scary Bill. He left this band in early 1988 to record a solo album (never released) in Sydney, reforming a three piece version of Temper Temper in Melbourne with Alan Powell on guitar and Greg Hynes (Push of Love) on drums. For the next three years, this band played Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, releasing a six-song mini-album “Station Road” and one 12 inch single “What’d I Do?”. Rob also did the occasional gig with Frank Moylan’s Chalk Circle and The Colonial V-Knees. David Sparks rejoined the band in 1989 for the recording of “Wonder of My Life” for Sydney’s 2MMM Homegrown Compilation. Temper Temper took an extended break in 1992, occasionally reforming for special events.

Rob then played bass with Broderick Smith’s band 1993-94, forming Submarine with Alan Powell, Greg Hynes and Arch Larizza (The Saints, The Shivers, Distressed Innocents) in 1995, before joining Autohaze on bass in 1996 until that band folded after releasing its second album.

Since 2000, Rob’s been singing and playing guitar and bass with The Truck Brothers, a cover band that exists for fun, beer and some classic rock moves. A CD“On the Inside” was released in 2003, featuring some interesting versions of classic rock hits such as Hey Joe, Heroes, House of the Rising Son, Khe Sanh and the title track.

In 2001, Kim Sampson brought Rob and Alan back together for some casual music making. This has become Brown Paper Bag and is now a four-piece with Clint Quan on bass, vocals and production duties. A self-titled cd is available and a new one is currently being recorded.

Linz

Linz Norris arrived in Adelaide in 1978 from Townsville, QLD with Adelaide band The Pensioners.

Prior to forming Safari Set with John and Rob, Linz was one of the guitarists in Lemmy Caution.

Safari Set came together after a newspaper ad and a mutual friend (Jeff Urquhart) put Rob and Linz in touch with each other.

After Safari Set broke up Linz remained in Adelaide, performing, recording and writing original music.

He played in two further bands with John Appleby, Kashmir Check and Forty Thousand Horsemen.

Linz is currently back working alone after two years playing with The Bridgy Boys (Jackboot Johnny) and Shanty Town, who recently disbanded.

Linz is now concentrating on recording a backlog of songs in his home studio.
